Crochet kits are quite popular among people who want to start crocheting. They come with all the supplies needed for a project and instructions on how to make it. I have seen many of these kits online but have never tried one, so when my local discount store started carrying them, I gave it a shot.
I wanted to see what comes inside of such kit and how easy it would be to make a DIY toy using one. It was also a great deal, as entire kit costs less than €4.
Last week I posted an unboxing video of DIY Crochet Llama on my YouTube channel.
My first impression was that this kit is not really beginner friendly, as it uses fluffy yarn. Fluffy yarn tends to hide mistakes better but also your stitches, so it is hard to crochet with.

DIY Crochet Llama kit came with 2 skeins of fluffy yarn, multiple colors of acrylic yarn, fiberfill, 3.5 mm crochet hook and a darning needle. It also comes with instructions, which at first glance are very detailed – they have tips on how to work with fluffy yarn and graphs on how to do the stitches.
My biggest tip when it comes to working with fluffy yarn is to use stitch markers in every stitch. It takes longer to crochet this way but it’s less frustrating, because you can see where to pull your hook through.

There are couple things that I did differently than the kit said to do – for example I skipped chain 1 at beginning of each round. Instead I crocheted in a continous rounds. I also made a different nose on this toy. In the picture on the box you can see that it has stripes that create kind of a muzzle. There were no instructions on how to do that in the pattern. But I also think that the kind of nose I made suits this llama better.

Other thing I changed is blanket. Blanket calls for Tunisian simple stitch and I had to learn how to do it, because I have never tried Tunisian crochet. I made my first blanket with acrylic yarn included in the DIY kit. I had some trouble finding the right tension and I think that I made my stitches too tight.
I then decided to switch yarn to Hobbii 8/4 100% cotton yarn and it was more pleasant experience for me.
You can see the outcome in my newest YouTube video. I also share some more tips about this llama pattern. There was a person asking about round 14 in a body part of the pattern. It may be hard to see how it all comes together later on, so I included explanation in the video.
Overall, I think that this kit is not suitable for a complete beginner who have never crocheted before. This kit was ridiculously cheap (FOUR EUROS! 🤯) for what is included in it, so if you have an opportunity to get it and want to make a crochet llama, I would definitely get it. But if you are just starting out with crochet, maybe make some other projects first.
I would also get a huge pack of stitch markers if you are going to work with fluffy yarn. They are handy, but also they break too easily, so it is better to have some spare ones.
Are you going to make this DIY crochet llama? Do you like working with fluffy yarn? Let me know!
