Hi! In today’s post I’m going to gather all of the crochet kits from Action discount stores that I have made and posted about online, to share my thoughts about general quality of those sets.
Let’s start with basic information about crochet kits from Action. Company responsible for producing them is Avec. Each kit retails at 3-4 euros. Action stores are present in 12 European countries but not every store carries the same assortment at the same time. I have noticed it with stores in my neighborhood, so I guess time of release and availability also varies country to country.
What’s included in an Avec crochet kit?
Crochet sets from Avec come with everything we need to make our chosen amigurumi – (more than enough) fiber fill and yarn, as well as crochet hook (most of the time it’s 3.5 mm metal hook) and darning needle. From what I remember from previous years, they used to include a stitch marker but I haven’t seen one in newer releases.
Crochet set also comes with instructions and pattern. I will elaborate more about the way patterns included in those kits are written later on.
Are crochet kits from Action beginner friendly?
To answer this question I mostly focus on the pattern. Each kit comes with basic instructions on how to crochet (new kits also include short videos accessible through QR code). But there’s no video tutorial included in each set. I understand that making video tutorials for each amigurumi would take time and rise cost of production/final product. But sometimes patterns we can find in crochet kits from Action are overly complicated and can be hard to read if you just started this craft.
That’s why I think it is best to start crocheting with video tutorials or easier patterns that are written in more beginner friendly way. I personally wouldn’t recommend picking up a hook for the first time with one of those crochet kits. It may be frustrating when you get stuck and it may lead to you giving up entirely.
But if you have done some amigurumi already and have made your toys with patterns written in different styles, you may want to give it a try.
Crochet kits I have made so far
In last two years I have made couple toys from Avec crochet kits available in Action. I have posted videos about them on my YouTube channel, so if you want to see them, I will link them down below.
Crochet llama was a first crochet kit from Avec that I picked up. I have received many questions about the pattern instructions from this kit, because they were not entirely clear. I have made a follow up video (available on my YouTube channel) about it, so I could explain what pattern’s author meant. But the amount of people who have purchased this kit and couldn’t understand the pattern should tell you something about the beginner- friendliness of them.
This year I picked up yet another crochet kit from Avec. This time it was a bunny. I think that the company is trying to improve their products, even though pattern style stays the same.
I have also made a crochet dachshund. As some of you may know, I have two miniature sausage dogs, so every time I see a crochet kit with one, it’s hard to resist getting it. It wasn’t available in the store nearby us but we found it in a different location.
Last but not least, I have picked up a crochet set for Easter eggs. I have made a short tutorial with it as well, so if you want to check it out, it’s available down below.
This crochet kit is the only one that I would actually recommend to people starting out. It is very simple shape, so the pattern is not overly complicated. It was a bit hard to crochet around a styrofoam egg though. If you want to make Easter eggs from this crochet kit, you have to hurry – my store has already sold out all the crochet sets and Easter is in TWO MONTHS! I honestly didn’t expect them to fly off the shelf so quickly.
I have made some other amigurumis from Avec crochet sets that I haven’t posted online. But with examples I have above, you can see a common theme. In my opinion crochet kits made by this company have their pros and cons. I wouldn’t recommend them for complete beginners but if you have some experience and like the toy, feel free to pick it up.
There’s also another factor that I haven’t mentioned in this post so far. All of the yarn in those sets is cheap acrylic. Aside from the fact that some people try to avoid acrylic yarn in general, due to plastic/microplastic concerns, low quality of it can make it harder to make your amigurumi with it. It’s not the most pleasant yarn I’ve ever worked with.
As you can see, even my opinion on crochet kits from Action is divided. I have some more sets that are currently sitting on my shelf. They are not available in the stores anymore but I’m going to post videos about them anyways, just in case they come back. My plan is to finish all of them before the end of March. For my future purchases, I will only purchase one if I really, REALLY like the toy.
But what do you think? Have you tried any of crochet kits from Avec? Maybe you stumbled upon my post while looking for reviews. Are you going to buy one of them?Share your thoughts in the comments down below!
Have a great day!
